When to Grow
Sunflowers are tall annuals that in some cultivars can grow to a height of 300 cm (120 inches) or more! Each ‘flower’ is actually a disc made up of tiny flowers, forming a larger false flower to better attract pollinators. Sunflowers like to grow in full sun in well-drained soil. The seeds are mainly sown from mid-April to the end of May.

How to Grow
- Sunflowers can be sown straight into the ground where they are going to flower, so make sure the space you are going to sow is weed-free by using a trowel to remove weeds.
- Make some holes about 12mm deep. Leave a 10cm space between each seed.
- Place each seed in carefully and cover it up with soil. Mark your seed patch with a label.
- Don’t forget to water the seeds gently. As they grow, if the plants are crowded, thin them out to about 45cm apart leaving the strongest, tallest plants.
- Be careful, as slugs and snails like to eat the new shoots. Protect your seedlings by collecting slugs and snails on a torch-light hunt in the evening.
- As your sunflower begins to grow taller than you, you will need to help support the stem by placing a cane in the ground near the plant and tying it to the stem with string.
- In dry weather give your plant a good watering.
- Watch your sunflower grow and grow and grow!
